The Homelessness, Drug Addiction, and Theft Reduction Act
Thrive LA PAC is proud to endorse Proposition 36, a vital initiative to reform Proposition 47.
Co-authored by Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón, whose re-election is also at stake this November, Prop 47 reclassified certain felony offenses as misdemeanors in an effort to reduce overcrowding in California prisons. However, since its passage, Prop 47 has led to a substantial increase in crime statewide and has made prosecuting serious offenses, such as “smash and grab” retail theft and fentanyl-related drug crimes, more difficult, making Los Angeles neighborhoods increasingly less safe.
In response to these public safety challenges, Prop 36 has qualified for the November 2024 ballot. This bipartisan initiative seeks to introduce common-sense reforms that allow felony charges for specific drug offenses and thefts under $950, addressing the gaps left by Prop 47.
Thrive LA PAC endorses this measure to enhance public safety while continuing to address the need for criminal justice reform.
