Thrive LA PAC proudly endorses Proposition 36, a vital initiative designed to reform Proposition 47 and restore public safety in California.
Co-authored by Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón, whose re-election is at stake this November, Prop. 47 aimed to reduce prison overcrowding by reclassifying certain felonies as misdemeanors. However, it has led to unintended consequences, including a surge in crime across the state and difficulties in prosecuting serious offenses such as fentanyl-related drug crimes and “smash and grab” retail theft.
While Thrive LA PAC supports criminal justice reform efforts, Prop. 47’s reduction of penalties has significantly impacted counties like Los Angeles. While stories of big box retailers often dominate the headlines, some of our most vulnerable groups have also become victims—small business owners, service workers, public transportation riders, street vendors, and youth across Los Angeles. These individuals are the lifeblood of our local economy and neighborhoods and deserve protection.
Proposition 36 seeks to address these issues by introducing common-sense reforms that allow felony charges for specific drug offenses and thefts under $950. This measure has qualified for the November 2024 ballot with the support of over 900,000 California voters and a diverse coalition of law enforcement leaders, small businesses, family-owned and minority business associations, and the mayors of San Francisco and San Jose. Prop 36 aims to ensure that serious crimes are appropriately prosecuted while continuing to support the need for criminal justice reform.
To support the passage of Prop 36, Thrive LA PAC has launched the “Crime Victims United” committee. Our focus is on mobilizing LA County voters who are committed to ensuring Los Angeles neighborhoods are safe places for our workers, families, and children. Through targeted canvassing and Get Out the Vote (GOTV) outreach, Thrive LA PAC aims to build a coalition of community safety-minded Angelenos who understand the need to regain control of our neighborhoods.
Investing in this initiative not only supports Prop 36 but also strengthens Thrive LA PAC’s role as a leading advocate for public safety and justice reform in Los Angeles. Our efforts will create data-rich voter files that can be used to help elect candidates that can balance these public safety priorities in future races, further solidifying our commitment to a safer and more equitable Los Angeles.
